This month we celebrate 198 years of Salvadoran Independence. Here at the Tamarindo, we recognize this occasion by being mindful of the opportunities and responsibilities in continuing this project of building a more just, peaceful, prosperous and faithful future for El Salvador. In this September edition, we will also celebrate academic achievement, new educational opportunities and the announcement of new programming and collaborators. We also give thanks to you for all your prayers, love and support.

Jon Cortina Scholars Defending Theses
This month, seven of our Jon Cortina scholarship students will be defending their undergraduate theses. We congratulate all seven of our students for their hard work. We also thank all of our partners in the United States who have contributed to make this dream a reality. Our seven graduates for 2019 are: Saira Carabantes (Social Work), Delmy Miranda (Social Work), Oscar Castillo (Social Work), Fanny Orellana (Social Work), Marilu Chavarria (Engineering), Susana Serrano (Nursing) and Alexander Delgado (Law). We will be sending out graduation information soon to which you are all invited.
Contributing to a More Just Society: Gender Education
As our commitment to building a new El Salvador deepens, we are so happy to announce the launching of our Gender Education Program, which will contribute to personal and integral development of our members, based on the need to reduce sexist practices within our community. This program will focus on a vision of coexistence, healthy recreation, training, awareness and empowerment of rights and gender equality. It is also designed to discourage children and youth from choosing gang life, reduce violence between women and men and discourage additional high risk behaviours. The project was inspired by the graduate thesis of Jon Cortina Scholarship students Saira Carabantes, Delmy Miranda, Katia Gomez and Sandra Diaz from Chalatenango. All four women (co-authors) of the investigation and project will be facilitating these workshops beginning in September.
Construction of the Thoman Learning Center
This month, we will be breaking ground on the Thoman Learning Center. We are so grateful for the generosity of the Thoman family who have made this dream a reality. The center will focus on promoting educational and professional skills contributing to employment creation, personal development and quality of life for the people of our region. The center will offer programs in English language training, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), microbusiness development and gender education. The builders project 100 days of construction so we hope to 
inaugurate the center in January of 2020.
Welcome Enrique “Quique” Rusconi
The Tamarindo Foundation welcomes Enrique Rusconi, who will be working with us on local development initiatives in collaboration with the Salvadoran government, international cooperation and Salvadoran foundations. Quique has been a friend and supporter of the Tamarindo since our inception. He has spent his life working for peace and justice in El Salvador, starting as a high school student joining Fr. Rutilio Grande SJ in his Christian Base Community work in Aguilares. After the war, he began working in municipal and community development initiatives and later served the vice president of El Salvador as his special assistant. We are grateful to have Quique as part of our team.
In Great Thanks to our Sister and Brothers in California
Last month, our Foundation was given the privilege to have been invited to three Roman Catholic parishes in the dioceses of Orange and San Diego as part of the 2019 Annual Mission Appeal Program. We are so grateful to Rev. Jeff Droessler of St. John Neuman (Irvine), Rev. Padre Jose Castillo of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (San Ysidro) and Rev. Sy Nguyen of St. Martin De Porres. We are not only grateful to these generous pastors, but also to their communities who were so good and loving to us. We also thank our board president, Steve Nasman, and his wife, Vicki, and our own bishop Osbaldo Aguilar, who made our participation in the Mission Appeal possible. We thank these three Catholic communities for your many gifts and prayers and look forward to seeing you again.

Giving Thanks
Lastly, allow us to give thanks to all of you for your love and generosity as we together build a new El Salvador one family at a time. Please keep us in your prayers and please keep spreading the word about the Tamarindo Foundation. This project can only continue to grow with your support. We need one another.

Este mes celebramos 198 años de independencia salvadoreña. Aquí en el Tamarindo, reconocemos esta ocasión siendo conscientes de las oportunidades y responsabilidades presentes para continuar este proyecto de construir un futuro más justo, pacífico, próspero y fiel para El Salvador. En esta edición de septiembre también celebraremos logros académicos, nuevas oportunidades educativas y el anuncio de nuevos programas y colaboradores. Este mes, siete de nuestrxs estudiantes en el Programa de Becas Jon Cortina defenderán sus tesis universitarias. Felicitamos a lxs siete estudiantes por su arduo trabajo. También agradecemos todo el apoyo desde los Estados Unidos que ha contribuido a hacer realidad este sueño. Nuestrxs siete graduados en el 2019 son: Saira Carabantes (Trabajo Social), Delmy Miranda (Trabajo Social), Oscar Castillo (Trabajo Social), Fanny Orellana (Trabajo Social), Marilu Chavarria (Ingeniería), Susana Serrano (Enfermería) y Alexander Delgado (Leyes). Pronto enviaremos más detalles sobre sus graduaciones a las cuales están todxs invitados.
Contribuyendo a una Sociedad más Justa: Educación de Género
A medida que profundizamos nuestro compromiso de construir un nuevo El Salvador nos complace anunciar nuestro nuevo Programa de Educación de Género que contribuirá al desarrollo personal e integral de lxs Tamarindxs en base a la necesidad de eliminar las prácticas sexistas dentro de nuestra comunidad. Este programa se centrará en una visión de convivencia, recreación saludable, capacitación, concientización y derechos e igualdad de género. También está diseñado para disuadir a niñxs y jóvenes de optar por la vida pandillera, eliminar la violencia entre mujeres y hombres y desalentar otros comportamientos de alto riesgo. El proyecto nació la tesis universitario de las estudiantes becadas Jon Cortina Saira Carabantes, Delmy Miranda, Katia Gómez y Sandra Díaz de Chalatenango. Las cuatro mujeres (coautoras) de la investigación y el proyecto facilitarán estos talleres a partir de septiembre.

Este mes estaremos abriendo camino para el Centro de Aprendizaje Thoman. Estamos muy agradecidxs por la generosidad de la familia Thoman que ha hecho realidad este sueño. El centro se enfocará en promover capacitaciones educativas y profesionales que contribuyan a la creación de empleo, el desarrollo personal y la calidad de vida de las personas en nuestra región. El centro ofrecerá programas de capacitación en inglés, STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas), desarrollo de microempresas y educación de género. Lxs constructores proyectan 100 días de construcción por lo que esperamos inaugurar el centro en enero del 2020.
Bienvenido Enrique "Quique" Rusconi
La Fundación Tamarindo le da la bienvenida a Enrique Rusconi quien trabajará con nosotrxs en iniciativas de desarrollo local en colaboración con el gobierno salvadoreño, organizaciones de cooperación internacional y fundaciones salvadoreñas. Quique ha sido un amigo y simpatizante del Tamarindo desde nuestros inicios. Ha trabajado a lo largo de su vida por la paz y la justicia en El Salvador desde que era estudiante de secundaria y se unió al Padre Rutilio Grande SJ en sus Comunidades Eclesiales de Base en Aguilares. Después de la guerra se involucró en iniciativas de desarrollo municipal y comunitario y después trabajó con el vicepresidente de El Salvador como su asistente especial. Estamos agradecidos de tener a Quique como parte de nuestro equipo.
En Agradecimiento a Nuestrxs Hermanas y Hermanos en California
El mes pasado la Fundación Tamarindo tuvo el privilegio de ser invitada a tres parroquias católicas romanas en las diócesis de Orange y San Diego como parte del Programa de Apelación Anual 2019. Estamos muy agradecidxs con el Padre Jeff Droessler de St. John Neuman (Irvine), el Padre José Castillo de Nuestra Señora del Monte. Carmelo (San Ysidro) y el Padre Sy Nguyen de San Martín De Porres. No solo estamos agradecidxs con estos generosos pastores sino también con sus comunidades que fueron tan buenas y amorosas con nosotrxs. También agradecemos a nuestro presidente de la Junta Directiva, Steve Nasman y a su esposa, Vicki y a nuestro propio obispo Osbaldo Aguilar que hicieron posible nuestra participación en la Misión de Apelación. Agradecemos a estas tres comunidades católicas por sus muchas aportaciones y oraciones y esperamos verles nuevamente.
